At Langston Amador Dental Group, we firmly believe in the power of preventive care to help our patients maintain optimal oral health. The very first step in a preventive oral care program is to avoid cavities, which are the major cause of tooth loss and dental health deterioration. One of the preventive oral care treatments we offer is dental sealants.
A dental sealant is a thin coat of plastic that is applied to the teeth to smooth out the surface and prevent the deposit of plaque and food particles. Dental sealants are mostly used as a form of preventive treatment for kids but have been found to be equally effective for adults.
Why are sealants needed?
The chewing surfaces of our back teeth are irregular and have grooves and fissures in them. Food debris, plaque and bacteria can inhabit these spaces. The bristles on a toothbrush cannot always reach these areas, and thus they become the perfect breeding ground for cavities.
The application of dental sealants is a simple and painless procedure and can be completed in a single sitting. First, we carefully examine your teeth. If any decay exists, it is gently removed. The tooth is then cleaned and dried, and an etching material is applied to it to help the sealants bond. After another rinse and drying, the liquid sealant is painted on to the tooth. Then, we wait for the sealant to harden. Sometimes, a special dental curing light is used to aid the hardening process. Once the sealant hardens, you are ready to go!
